I have not altered this response from Bruce. May he rest in peace.

The Euro Carrera was continued into the beginning of the 1976 model year, but only one hundred and fifty three were built as 1976 models. Carrera 3.0 liter introduced as a model in Europe, The 3.0-liter Carrera was the forerunner of the 911SC and the replacement for the Carrera at the top of the line normally aspirated Porsche 911. Carrera engine used same die cast aluminum crankcase as the turbo engine. There were 1093 coupes and 479 Targas in 76 and 1473 coupes and 646 Targas in 1977 for a total of 3691. None of these cars were exported to the US, there was not a US version. The 3.0 Carrera engine really uses all of the same basic components that the SC did, I am not sure how they came up with different horsepower figures for the two. The differences were that it use the same crankcase and crankshaft as the 3.0 911 Turbo where the flywheel was still mounted with six bolts. The SC and 1978 Turbos had a different crankcase and a larger flywheel mounting with nine bolts. The Carrera 3.0 is unusual in the US because it was not marketed here in the US, it was not mysterious on the world market. I have appraised a number of these cars and they are usually worth a little less than a 1978 911SC depending upon their condition. 1976 production Coupe: 9116600001 ? 9116601093 Targa: 9116610001 ? 9116610479 1977 production Coupe: 9117600001 ? 9117601437 Targa: 9117610001 - 9117610646 VIN number Decoded: 911 6 6 0 1050 911 = vehicle type 6 = model year 6 = Carrera 0 = Coupe 1050 consecutive serial number* Note: For 1976 the only way you can tell the Carrera 3.0 cars from the 2.7 Carrera built for the 1976 model year is by the first digit of the four digit consecutive serial number. For the 2.7 Carrera that first digit is a 9 and for the Carrera 3.0 that digit started with a 0 and ran up to 1093. Carrera Engine Number 6670690 6 = 6 cylinder engine 6 = engine type, 6 is 911 Carrera engine Rest of World. 7 = 1977 Model year 0690 = sequential serial number So the engine in question is a six cylinder Carrera engine for Rest of World application, built in model year 1977 as the 0690th engine.
